Create a device that would shorten the takedown process and prevent carpel tunnel in stylists (increasing the value of Swella's takedown service)

solution: automate the unbraiding process

problem statement

How might we shorten the takedown process with an electric mechanism?

How might we decrease carpel tunnel syndrome in braid stylists?

solution

An electro-mechanical device that shortens the takedown process by 25% and decreases the chance of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by aligning the median and ulnar nerves.

research: background

Braided styles have a rich history dating back to the ancient Egyptians, but became less popular after the civil war due to their cultural association with slavery. Braided styles have become popularized in the 21st century following a renaissance of rap and r&b during the 90s in which many black artists were photographed wearing braids.

problem

Braid takedown is a lengthy process that causes carpal tunnel syndrome in stylists due to the repetitive motion and gripping tools that are not ergonomic.

driving interview quotes

“If a client comes in for a takedown, wash & dry, and braids? That’s easily a 10+ hour day, and that’s the only client I can see that day.”

“I’ve had carpel tunnel a few times, usually I soak my hands in cold water at the beginning of the shift to help reduce the inflammation.”
